A suspect has been arrested in connection with a shocking face-slashing attack on a tourist in New York City. Joshua Zinberg, 25, was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon after his mother recognized him in surveillance footage released by the police.
The attack occurred in a busy area of the Upper West Side, where a 55-year-old tourist was slashed in the face, leaving serious cuts on his left ear and cheek. The victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment following the attack.
Zinberg, who lives in the same neighborhood, was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. After his arrest, Zinberg was seen in footage leaving the police precinct, spitting toward reporters and rambling incoherently.
Authorities were initially puzzled by the random nature of the attack, but Zinberg’s mother stepped forward to identify him after seeing the police footage. The incident has raised concerns about public safety in the area, as it occurred in broad daylight.
Neighbors expressed shock at the incident, as the Upper West Side is known for its upscale atmosphere and generally low crime rates. Local residents were disturbed by the randomness of the attack and worried about the safety of the area.
“The area is usually so peaceful, it’s hard to believe something like this could happen here,” said a local resident, who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s a reminder that you never know what can happen, even in places you feel safe.”
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, is reportedly recovering in the hospital, though the injuries are said to be serious. Police are continuing to investigate the motive behind the attack, but at this time, they believe it was a random and unprovoked assault. Authorities have expressed gratitude for the public’s help in identifying the suspect and bringing him into custody.
