President-elect Donald Trump has picked Pam Bondi, the former Attorney General of Florida, to be his choice for U.S. Attorney General. This comes after Matt Gaetz, who was initially nominated, dropped out.
Trump announced the decision late Thursday, praising Bondi for her tough work as a prosecutor. He highlighted her long career in law, saying she worked hard to make Florida streets safer, especially by going after violent criminals. As Florida’s first female Attorney General, Bondi also focused on stopping dangerous drug trafficking and tackling the opioid crisis, especially the rise in fentanyl overdose deaths.
Bondi, 59, is well-known for being a Trump ally. She was one of Trump’s defense lawyers during his first impeachment trial, where he was accused of abusing his power by pressuring Ukraine. The Senate ultimately acquitted Trump of the charges.
Bondi also helped with Trump’s efforts to fight the opioid crisis and served as a key supporter during his recent presidential campaign. She even attended Trump’s hush-money trial to show her support.
Having served as Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019, Bondi has a lot of experience. She was the first woman to hold that position in the state.
As Attorney General, Bondi would oversee the Justice Department, which has more than 100,000 employees and deals with everything from federal criminal laws to civil rights and antitrust cases. It also supervises major law enforcement agencies like the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Trump strongly supports Bondi, saying she will refocus the Justice Department on fighting crime and keeping America safe. He praised her as smart, tough, and committed to an “America First” approach.
Bondi is Trump’s second choice for Attorney General after Matt Gaetz dropped out due to ongoing allegations of sexual misconduct. Gaetz had been under investigation for paying for sex with a 17-year-old girl, but the investigation ended without charges. However, the House Ethics Committee was still looking into the matter when Gaetz resigned from Congress.
With Gaetz out, Trump turned to Bondi, who he believes is the right person for the job.
So, while Trump’s choice for Attorney General has changed, he’s confident that Pam Bondi is up to the task.
